WAMMY

MAKING SECTIONS

So, its 7 ft. at 6 seconds and I have not surfed in many many hours. Its raining, and you know the beach is empty. I can finally get in my 3/2 with no booties.........Sounds like summer, and wind swell has never been so welcome. Especially when you've got a the ultimate small wave board under your feet, want to make the most of you summer? Order a VEC, making some of the most progressive shapes in the region, VEC can put that magic board under your feet.
I've been riding one of VEC's rocket shapes lately, a little 5'5" quad rocket, and can honestly say wind swell has never been the same. Producing speed from the mushiest of peaks and flying through sections with ease. Don't let this lead you to think these shapes are for smaller weak waves, cause this thing will surprise you on a solid clean swell. Get your self a VEC and feel what it is like to have a local progressive shape under your feet.

Badah BING

Thats what Tony Saprano would say if he saw the gems we had hanging from the cealing. Got some dang perty boards that just came is, uncluding four BING's that any surfer would love to ride. These things are more a piece of art than your normal board, all the wonderful looks of a retro, with all the moderna concave and materials you could want. I want one.

It is a little hard for me to get motivated enough to write something mindly entertaining on here, I need a good surf and then it will all come back. There was something around today for those who were stoked enough to get out there, for some reason I wasn't paying attention to the bouy's and I missed our, opting for a little sunday snooze instead, I need to start sleeping on a concrete bed. SO if you have the day off, go to the beach and get in the water, I would if I could.

If anyone is reading this, send me some photos, my archive is getting a little depleated, not really, but I would like to see some new photos. E-mail them, and they will magically apear on this blog....... Nerjarvis@gmail.com DO IT! please

I lost count, but we have about 40 something surfboards here at the shop, name the shape you want and I bet you I can locate it here. Some great prices on some really nice shapes, only the best here at XB, come get your new shape today....or tomorrow.

WHERE DID WINTER GO???

Time fly's by way to fast, last thing I knew we were in the midst of one of the coldest winters I remember, next thing its 80 degrees out. Even worse, the last swell I surfed had a 7 second period.......At least there are boards designed for this kind of messy stuff, and honestly, I don't know about the rest of you, but I'll take what I can get, time to get used to waist high wind shop!
As the temperatures rise, my mind gets flooded with thoughts of Tropical swell, a report on the interweb stated that this could be a Hurricane season to remember. As an El Nino year, I think we can expect the Atlantic to explode once, twice or thrice this summer, and if this El Nino is anything like the last, the weather channel better start thinking up a bunch of good names for all the Atlantic's lil children that are only a few months away. Cross your fingers!!
Here at the shop, I'm having a hard time not spending my paycheck, so much new gear and equipment that it's hard to tell you about everything. We've got the latest from NIXON, VOLCOM, QUICKSILVER, DVS, O'NEILL, OAKLEY, VON ZIPPER, to name a few......so if you've got some time to kill and a hankering for some new goods, 610 State Road is where to be.

POCKET ROCKET!

There is something to be said about the recent trend toward smaller and more maneuverable surf boards. It is difficult not to notice that even the best surfers in the world are altering their quiver towards a shorter wider, more maneuverable futuristic designs. Look at Slater and the "deep six" as he calls it, winning the pipe masters while riding a 5'8", or Dane Reynolds with his "Dumpster Diver", a relative grom shoartboard with a little extra foam. As surfing in its entirety begins to change with each passing year, as will the shapes we see under people's feet. Composite, or glass and resin, new materials and different approaches to riding a waves are quickly changing what was traditionally known as surfing.

You want to see what the future is? http://www.marinelayerproductions.com/

A NOTE ON SURFING FUTURISM

Where once we saw a single man's attempt to reach the sublime, we now find a believed passage to the stars. Yet the young should remember that while a wooden ship might take man across the seas, it will never sail him to the moon. Such is the naivete of the man who holds inverted rotations as the peak of human performance. For while he may have climbed the peak of Everest, he has not even set foot on the mountains of Mars.

A familiar rotation, while airborne, yet firmly gripped by both hands-a metaphor for both the soaring freedom of the mind yet the earthly prison of this body, a tumultuous reminder of the Cartesian duality to which we are all bound.
Feels like summer now, after those really warm days, we got our first glimpse at some good old summery winds swell. Waist to Chest sloppy shop, but so much fun if you want to get in the water. Summer is not all bad

EXPLO.....

....ration......found some uniqueness once again. Waves were solid last weekend and the weather was perfect. If you did a little driving I'm sure you scored something. Found this little wave, shut down with the tide but was really fun for a while, steep take off's and sketchyness on the inside.

SURPRISE

Nothing really tops a day when you've got work, you know it, you've accepted it, and then the boss lets you go late morning so you can get barreled. To top things off, the waves you thought would be o.k., end up firing instead. This could be my everyday in a perfect world, but come summer, don't expect many days like this. Even if we find some good surf in the summer, you can bet there will be 10 times as many people on it, the summer folk. Finding some super clean gems, with just a couple of your friend surely can not be matched, and thanks to some Light snow showers and 35 degree water it pretty much stayed that way all day.
.
.
After scrambling to get out of my wetsuit and into some dry clothes, driving 45 minutes home, turning the heat way up and grabbing a seat on the couch, the inter-web was nice enough to grace me with images of the Gold Coast, warm water and Taj Burrow winning at Snapper Rocks, I could not have been happier to be from good old New England. Yeah they've got that warm water, and maybe one of the best rights in the world, but they also have hundreds of people trying to session together, and an ASP tour stop taking over their wave for a good chunk of time. We don't have any of that, any of it, we're lucky, I always try remember that when its flat.

KILLIN IT BRAAAA

XB up and coming surfer Matt Cunha made short work of the past run of swell we had. Matt dominated all locals and showed everyone what was up the other day. I have attached a video at the bottom that shows Matt right after his gnar session here in good ol New England. Sorry for getting in your way the other day man, thanks for only ripping one of my fins out with your bare hands.

Really though, we had some fun waves the past week or so, if you did a little searching you were scoring for sure. With water temps finally on the rise, slightly, it is already feeling like Spring around these parts, even had the door open at the shop today, a sure sign of things to come.

If you need some new gear, check in at XB, we already have some Spring and Summer stuff from VOLCOM and will soon have VONZIPPER eye wear and NIXON outer wear and wrist wear. Check it out and sport the freshest apparel in 2010!!

The mountains won't be shutting down anytime soon, so take advantage of what is left of this winter and get some runs in. All winter gear is on sale right now, if you want some winter outwear that will last you, come take advantage of the 40% off sale going on right now. Save some money and look good while doing it.

Keeping the word count to a minimum today, short and sweet, I'll have a deluge of info coming your way in a day or two. Till then, come check out the coolest store on the east coast.

REPRESENTING

The 42nd Annual Mid-Winter Championships went off yesterday in o.k. conditions, wind was not the best, but there was plenty of swell. The event was held at Narragansett town beach and had a pretty good turn out, with a lot of eager competitors and spectators. As this is the oldest running winter event in the world, it was yet again history in the making. Air temps were in the low 30's as were water temps, but it was hard to find anyone who was complaining about the cold.

XB team riders Joe Booth and Ray Jarvis were pretty dominant in the event, taking two first place finishes, one in the Men's short board, and one in the masters short board, also taking a second and fourth place finish in the men's open short board. Peter Pan was there running the show, and took sometime to show everyone how to long board when he connected a few rights from the outside all the way in, the man has style. What a fun day it was, grilling some steaks in the back of a truck, and filling up on hot liquid made time between heats pass quickly. Thanks to everyone who was there and I'm sure we are all looking forward to next year.
Lots of swell this week, if you found some shelter that is, winds were less than favorable for most of the North East, but the swell was booming in a lot of locations up and down the coastline. We got word that parts of Maine saw 30+ foot surf this weekend, and there were buoy reading of 35+ foot swell heading right for the coast. Not to be surfed by any means, but just goes to show that the Atlantic can produce some serious swell when she wants to. With Spring fast approaching it looks like we are getting into a much more active weather pattern, bad for those who don't like rain and snow, but good for all of us who just want to get in the water as much as possible. March, and April always seem to be really productive months for surf, and lets cross our fingers that this year wont be any different. WAVES!!!
Northern parts saw a mix of some crazy weather this past week, some places got doused with heavy rain, while others got dumped on with huge amounts of snow. If your heading to the mountains, check the conditions before, you will either be pleasantly surprised or the opposite. Still plenty of winter to go here though, so there is still lots of riding to get done.
Got some sweet new gear from VOLCOM in the shop, jeans, T's, hats and sweatshirts.

THE ENCROASHING SEA

Nothing is ever a sure thing, I've experienced this way to many times here is good old New England. Just when you think you knows whats going to happen, things change, that's just how it is, maybe the swell peaked at 11 p.m., maybe the storm spun off the coast a lot quicker than expected. The fact is that we have a lot of swell opportunities around the north-east that go relatively unnoticed.

If there is a swell in the water, hitting our coastline, you can almost be assured that on the rite tide, in the rite spot, you will find a wave. Easier said than understood, finding that wave that may work for a short window of time is the mission, and even before you get in the water your search must begin. With so much water moving in and out of coastline with every tide, what may be a barreling little nugget of a wave at low tide, may be complete mush or just not even there when the tide is full. On the contrary, who's to say that same area wont have a different wave at the higher tide, as water fills in over a shelf of reef and wave may start braking. The age of surf exploration is still very much alive in the north eastern portions of the U.S., as surfing grows more secrets are common knowledge. Reading your coast, learning your tides and having a little luck could reveal a gem.

As I type this the coastline is getting pounded by extra large winter swell. Some of the highest readings I've seen on the bouy's all winter, with swell readings of 18+ feet at double digit periods, not bad, just wish the wind direction was a little more favorable. There are definitely sheltered opportunities though if you want it bad enough.

Come check out some new gear here at the shop, new VOLCOM clothing and coming soon all new VON ZIPPER eye wear, get ready for the summa!!!

Water

I, you, he, she, it, we, you, and they have all been labeled, stereotyped, and judged by what we do. In and out of the water, board or no board, we are what people call "Surfers". Slow talking, slow thinking, one track minded surfers, not in a rush to do anything except catch a cool buzz and some tasty waves, right? Maybe we have, but we also can't be all serious about it, its fun, thats all it is for most of us.

As the sport has progressed and modernized you will be hard pressed to find a lazy surfer. In fact, surfers as a whole have become some of the more health conscious and athletically fit athletes in today's world. Embodying all that is natural and unforced, we find our peace of mind and our gym only a few short paddles from the coastline. Not that any of this is limited to surfing, anyone passionate enough about something really makes it their life. You can not give any of us a label, we are those who share moments with the ocean, with the pavement, snow, or whatever it may be that drives our lives.

A HEAD GAME

Psyching your self up for something is as common place as breathing, getting psyched up for a test, new job, a date, or a heavy session are things that we just do, it boosts our confidence and helps us perform at our peak. However, its just as easy and common to psyche your self out in any given situation, and no matter the situation this can lead to poor performance, no second date, or even injury.

This is completely opinionated, but I've seen and experienced how lack of confidence can quickly put you in a troublesome situation. Mostly I'm trying to relate this to surfing, but you can use it wherever you want. Having a conscious awareness of our capabilities is not the easiest, and doing so in amongst the chaos of the ocean is another story. It is easy to be intimidated by big surf, or even just a shallow reef, but knowing you've made that drop, or beat out that section before will help to slow things down, and without a doubt helps you perform like you know you can.

As if the waves weren't enough to worry about, throw a few egotistical surfing in the line up and see what happens to your train of though. Now it becomes a game of positioning and out paddling, filled with frowns and dirty looks, but that's pretty much all it is. Putting the head games aside is key to getting your waves and enjoying a good session. There are countless surfers who spend so much of their time in the water worrying about what the other guy is doing, instead of watching for approaching sets or finding the optimum spot in the line up. More often than not, worrying about other people's position puts you out of position, and while you were busy trying to out paddle that other guy, a nice set snuck through a you were totally out of position. Of course all this talk of head games would be obsolete if common etiquette was practiced in the lineups, but don't hold your breath. As surfing takes off, and lineups start filling up there is only going to be more of these games going on because in case you haven't noticed, everyone surfs, yeah I surf.
Yeah, so looks like waves for all of New England this coming week, keep an eye on the storm though as things look like they may or may not change quickly. Should see a couple storms pass through the region this week though, one more mid-week and one passing through later towards the weekend, hopefully supplying a little swell for the 42nd annual New England Mid-Winter Surfing Championships being held on the Feb. 27th at Narragansett Town Beach. Should be a good competition with talented surfers expected to make the trip from all over the East Coast.
